Why We Started ForFullFun

When my daughter Emma turned 18 months old, I realized something that shocked me: every toy that came home felt like a moral compromise.

Either it was plasticβ€”which meant toxic chemicals, landfill guilt, and the knowledge that I was contributing to a problem I claimed to care about solving. Or it was supposedly "eco-friendly," which meant paying $85 for a wooden toy that broke within a year, or came with labor practices I couldn't verify. And almost every toy, regardless of material, was designed to overstimulate. Lights. Sounds. Constant novelty. I'd watch my daughter play with these toys and see her nervous system light up like a casinoβ€”wild-eyed, manic, unable to focus.

I felt trapped. My values said one thing. The toy industry offered another.

The moment that crystallized everything happened on a Tuesday morning in March 2023. I was sitting on the living room floor, watching Emma with an expensive "educational" toy shaped like a phone. She tapped it, it lit up, it made sounds. Her whole body responded with this frenetic energyβ€”overstimulated, hyper, almost manic. Then I grabbed a wooden block from a toy set my grandmother had given me (from the 1980s, by the wayβ€”still perfect). I handed it to her.

She stopped. She felt its weight. She examined the grain. She built something. She focused. There was this momentβ€”quiet, absorbed, deepβ€”where she was so in-the-zone that the world disappeared. That's when I knew: the problem wasn't that good toys don't exist. It's that we've been taught to want the wrong things.

I spent the next 6 months researchingβ€”reading Montessori studies, interviewing 50+ parents, visiting toy factories in North America and Europe. I realized the real problem: parents don't need better marketing. They need trust. Provable trust.

So in January 2024, my co-founder James and I started ForFullFun with one mission: build heirloom toys for families who believe in quality over consumption. Not with marketing claims. With proof.

Our Philosophy

ForFullFun is built on three non-negotiable pillars. We measure every decision against these three commitments:

1

Buy It For Life

Durability over consumption. A toy that lasts 15–20 years and passes through multiple children is infinitely more sustainable than cheap plastic replaced every few months. Our toys are designed to become heirlooms.

2

The Smile-Spark

Deep focus over overstimulation. Our toys are designed for that quiet, absorbed moment of pure focusβ€”what we call the Smile-Spark. Open-ended, natural, simple. The opposite of screens and sensory chaos.

3

Transparent Ethics

Honesty over marketing. You deserve to know exactly how, where, and by whom your child's toys are made. We publish our supply chain, our labor practices, and our certifications. No greenwashing. Just transparency.

What We Value

🌲 Sustainable Sourcing

FSC-certified wood from responsibly managed forests. Water-based finishes. Zero PFAS, BPA, or formaldehyde. We measure impact and publish annual sustainability reports.

🀝 Fair Labor Practices

Every toy is made by people earning fair wages in safe conditions. We partner with manufacturers in North America and Europe and publish annual third-party ethics audits from Fair Trade USA.

πŸ“š Education & Support

We believe parents deserve resources, not guilt. Our blog covers Montessori philosophy, child development, and screen-free parentingβ€”all grounded in real research.

πŸ” Complete Transparency

We share our supply chain, certifications, and limitations. We're not perfectβ€”but we're honest about where we fail and where we want to improve.

♻️ Repairability & Longevity

A scratched toy isn't disposable. We offer refinishing kits, repair services, and the philosophy that wear is beautifulβ€”it's proof the toy was loved.

🎯 Intentional Curation

We don't sell everything. We choose toys that cultivate deep, focused playβ€”not overstimulation. Quality over quantity, always.

Supply Chain & Compliance

Ensures every toy passes CPSC, EN 71, and EU TSR requirements. Manages certifications, audits, and the Digital Product Passport program. Compliance is her superpower.

Certifications & Commitments

πŸ”¬

CPSC & EN 71 Certification

Every toy meets CPSC (US) and EN 71 (EU) safety standards. We exceed minimum chemical limits: Lead ≀0.5mg/kg (vs. 2mg/kg limit), Cadmium ≀0.1mg/kg (vs. 0.2mg/kg limit). Independent third-party testing by SGS Labs (4x per year).

πŸ“‹

EU TSR 2025/2509 Compliance

We're 6 months ahead of the August 2026 deadline. All toys tested for banned chemicals (PFAS, BPA, phthalates, formaldehyde). Digital Product Passports (DPP) will launch Q2 2026 for full supply chain transparency.

🌲

FSC & PEFC Certification

100% of our wood is FSC-certified from responsibly managed forests. Current suppliers: Sustainable Timberlands (Ontario), Groupe DΓ©fi (Quebec), ISOBOARD (Poland). Full chain-of-custody documentation for every toy.

βš–οΈ

Fair Trade & Labor Standards

Fair Trade USA certification across all manufacturing partners. Annual third-party audits from SAI (Social Accountability International). Wage audits conducted every 6 months to ensure living wages in all production locations.

🎯

B-Corp Certification (In Progress)

We're in the assessment phase for B-Corp status (targeting Q4 2025). This legally codifies our commitment to social and environmental responsibility alongside profit. We're also pursuing Climate Neutral certification for 2027.

πŸ“Š

Annual Transparency Reports

We publish complete Sustainability & Ethics Reports every January (most recent: January 2025 covering 2024). Topics include manufacturing locations, labor audit results, chemical test data, and environmental impact metrics. View all reports.

Stories From Parents

Here's what conscious parents have to say about ForFullFun toys in their homes.

"I was skeptical about the price until I realized my 2-year-old played with the wooden blocks 45 minutes straight. No iPad. No interruptions. Just deep focus and creativity. That's worth every penny. Plus knowing they were made ethically? That peace of mind is priceless."

Jessica T.
Portland, Oregon

"My oldest got a ForFullFun set when she was a toddler. Now we're passing it to my newborn. No splinters, no damage, no missing pieces. The quality is unreal. And the fact that I know every toy was made by fairly-paid workers in safe conditions? My values and my parenting finally align."

Marcus L.
Montreal, Quebec

"We're trying to reduce screen time. ForFullFun toys are so thoughtfully designed that my kids actually choose them over tablets. The founder's letter about the 'Smile-Spark' moment really resonated with me. We're seeing that quiet focus every day now."
